Abstract
Background: Medical education in India has undergone substantial expansion and regulatory transformation over the past decade. The transition from the Medical Council of India to the National Medical Commission has further reshaped the regulatory and educational framework. Objective: To review the present scenario of medical education in India, with particular emphasis on its expansion, regulatory reforms, major challenges, and future directions. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using relevant published literature, regulatory documents, government reports, and publicly available information concerning medical education in India, particularly during 2016–2026. Results: India has witnessed a marked increase in the number of medical colleges and undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats. Despite improved access to medical education, challenges remain regarding faculty availability, infrastructure, clinical exposure, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, teaching-learning processes, and equitable distribution of medical education and healthcare resources. Conclusion: Expansion of medical education should be accompanied by strong quality assurance, adequate faculty and clinical resources, competency-based training, transparent regulation, and continuous assessment of educational outcomes.
