Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge regarding rainbow nutrition among mothers residing in selected rural areas of Jalandhar, Punjab, India. Background: Rainbow nutrition emphasizes the consumption of fruits and vegetables of different colours to ensure dietary diversity and adequate intake of essential nutrients. Mothers play a central role in food selection and meal preparation within families, particularly in rural settings where nutritional awareness may be limited. Limited knowledge regarding rainbow nutrition may contribute to inadequate dietary diversity and increased risk of nutritional deficiencies among children and families. Methods: A descriptive research design was adopted. The study was conducted among mothers residing in selected rural areas of Jalandhar, Punjab. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess awareness of colourful fruits and vegetables and their nutritional benefits. Ethical approval was obtained prior to data collection, and informed consent was secured from all participants. Results: The findings indicated that mothers demonstrated varying levels of knowledge regarding rainbow nutrition. While some mothers showed good awareness, a considerable proportion had only average or inadequate understanding. Knowledge levels were influenced by selected socio-demographic characteristics, particularly educational status and economic background. Discussion: The findings suggest that although basic awareness of rainbow nutrition exists among mothers, significant gaps remain. Socio-economic factors appear to influence nutritional knowledge, highlighting the importance of targeted education strategies in rural communities. Conclusion: The study concludes that mothers possessed a moderate level of knowledge regarding rainbow nutrition. Strengthening nutrition education initiatives is essential to improve dietary diversity and promote healthier food practices among rural families. Implications for Nursing: Community health nurses can play a vital role in promoting awareness of rainbow nutrition through education sessions, counselling, and community outreach activities. Implications for Nursing Policy: Health and nursing policies should support structured community-based nutrition education programmes focusing on dietary diversity to improve family and child nutrition outcomes.
