Abstract

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with significant dermatological and systemic implications. This study evaluates its prevalence, clinical characteristics, comorbidities, treatment responses, and medication-induced exacerbations in a tertiary care setting. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 53 patients diagnosed with psoriasis at Bangalore Baptist Hospital, India, was conducted over six months in 2024. Data on demographics, clinical presentations, comorbidities, treatment patterns, and outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Psoriasis prevalence was 1.41%, consistent with global estimates. Males predominated (56.6%), with the highest prevalence in the 18–29 age group (24.5%). Plaque psoriasis was the most common subtype (47.1%), followed by scalp (28.3%) and palmoplantar psoriasis (26.4%). Itching was reported by 64.15% of patients. Comorbidities included obesity (40%) and psychological disorders (36%). No significant association was found between age and treatment response (p=0.995). Methotrexate was the most prescribed systemic medication (14.05%). Conclusion: Psoriasis imposes a significant burden, necessitating a holistic, individualized management approach addressing both cutaneous and systemic aspects. Future research should focus on targeted therapies for specific subtypes and long-term outcomes.
